About

Kanithakalam means the core field of mathematics. Kalam is a gathering place — a common ground where people come together.

That is the idea behind this site. Mathematics is usually taught as a set of procedures to be reproduced under time pressure. But the reason people fall in love with it is different: it is the moment a hard question turns out to have a simple shape underneath. Those moments rarely survive a syllabus.

So this is a place for problems worth sitting with. Each piece takes one question, follows the intuition first, and only then writes down the algebra — because the algebra is easier to believe once you already know what it is going to say.

The writing assumes no prerequisites. If you can follow a diagram, you can follow these.

Who this is for

School students who suspect there is more to the subject than the exam. University students who want to see where the ideas came from. And anyone who was told once that they were not a maths person and never quite believed it.
